Shanghai Yangshan CIQ: Multiple Measures Taken For Better Inspection and Quarantine of Imported Wood
A few days ago, Shanghai Yangshan CIQ intercepted and captured a living lizard and two living toads from a batch of Chiviri square logs from Benin. The lizard measured 60 cm long, and weighted 400 grams. This batch goods was Chiviri square logs, totally 68 CBMs, 96000KGS, 47600USDs, shipped from Cotonou, Benin. As this kind of foreign reptiles probably carries epidemic diseases which will threaten local animals. CIQ officials conducted fumigation and disinfection on the logs and the container. Meanwhile, they require strengthen the spot inspection on containers from Benin and strictly supervise so as to effectively prevent the threat to domestic ecological environment brought by foreign species. Facing complex epidemic disease situation, Yangshan CIQ takes multiple measures to do a better inspection and quarantine job on imported wood. Firstly, they introduce epidemic disease risk analysis to increase interception and capture rate. Secondly, they strengthen business training and enhance the inspector¡¯s detection ability. Yangshan CIQ opens timber business training course, and invites plant and animal inspection and quarantine experts to give live lectures , makes and displays common epidemic diseases pictures, so as to enhance training of first-line inspectors and increase their capacity for detecting harmful species. In this way, the identification and treatment time will be shortened and the customs clearance efficience will be improved.
